In an unexpected rebellious display- Genentech employees -who are forced to march three times a week as part of a Roche inspired mental conditioning- showed their outrage by coordinating their headgear. The goose-stepping turned into a mile long DNA double helix. Obviously a plea to outsiders for help.

Here is a local San Diego surfer (who now lives in Dana Point) DNA image on a background of an actual sunset at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. I took this picture on my iPhone while enjoying the sunset at Moonlight - my local beach.

San Onofre did not melt down- the image was colorized by Yonder Biology to obtain the unusual colors you see here. Yonder printed this on canvas and it looks great. I presented this as a gift to my surfer buddy for his 40th.

What information should you expect to see from your DNA art?

At Yonder, we want you to have fun creating your one-of-a-kind DNA portrait. Secretly, we also aim to educate you and the general population about DNA. Yonder’s scientific team has developed a process to take any person’s DNA and provide that person with their unique DNA barcode. Unless that person has an identical twin, the DNA pattern will be completely unique to him or her.

For example, two sisters submitted their DNAs to Yonder Biology to create DNA portraits. Since they have the same mom and dad, we would expect to see a very similar DNA pattern, but they are not identical twins, so there should be some detectable differences in their DNA patterns. At first glance, they appear to be the same, but upon closer investigation, the differences are there.

Here are the 2 DNA patterns below. Note the white circle on the left DNA image, corresponds to the difference circled in white in DNA image on the right. The blue circles correspond to the differences between the two DNA images, and so on.

It’s the ultimate self-portrait: Send off your DNA, and get back a work of art based on your unique genetic sequence.

As a molecular biologist working in industry, Andy Bass knew “how beautiful genetic images are in the lab” and wanted to “aesthetically connect people to DNA.” So he started Yonder Biology (www.yonderbiology.com), a California-based company that creates personalized gifts inspired by genes. Technicians extract DNA from mailed-in cheek swabs and sequence them using common techniques: polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis. Bass says he spends a lot of time “optimizing these standard laboratory procedures for aesthetic value.” The resulting unique pattern is stained with ultraviolet dye and photographed; then designers tweak it into a painting worthy of any stylish pad.

GeneticPhotos is the newest venture on the scene, but Yonder Biology may still win best in show — just ask about their doggy DNA portraits.

They say there's an artist inside all of us, which can't be sanitary, as those hippies rarely wash. Proving that there's at least art inside all of us: Yonder Biology.

Started by two former creatively-frustrated bio-tech'ers, SD-based Yonder's created an ingenious/rad method to "blend science with art", producing customizable mountings out of your specific genetic code, or even that of your favorite dog, unless your dog's the boxer who got Rex-chomped the last time a DNA-experiment got loose in San Diego. Select your basic design online, and they'll mail you a cheek-swab to taint with your cells and mail back, at which point things get sciency: they'll isolate the DNA via reagent-opening of the cells, capture the strands by vacuuming out the excess before amplifying them, and then finally separate the segments through gel electrophoresis, in which patterns're created by the segments sliding through agarose gel, all of which you were supposed to learn in 9th grade Bio, but -- omg, did you hear that Julia Rosenthal totally blew Matt at the semi?!? A high-res shot of the result's taken under UV light, and then manipulated to your liking with pre-set or choose-your-own color schemes, as well as the ability to place text and/or an actual photo behind the DNA design, with past examples ranging from simple self-portraits, to a snowboarder charging off a cliff, to a uniformed kid on the mound with "Baseball...it's in my DNA": probably true, as his Dad must've homered at least once.

Proofs are emailed for final approval before they print your mansterpiece, with sizing options from 13x19" to 36x56", and media from photo-quality prints, to stretched "Gallery Quality Canvas" on 1.5" deep frames, to the luxurious "Acrylic Face Mount", something you normally wouldn't get, but, if it's in the name of art...

DNA is what makes each and everyone of us unique since it is a series of genetic codes inherited from parents that determine physical traits like eye and hair color and even some health conditions.

In recent decades, because of the genes it contains, DNA has been the subject of intensive scientific study. Some companies offer genetic testing for diseases or DNA ancestry, but such services are under scrutiny for questionable accuracy and reliability.

A Californian company named "Yonder Biology" decided to do something altogether different using DNA. They create customized artwork using DNA.

Customers will receive a collecting kit by mail. Then they can use the sterile cotton swab to collect their own cheek cells and send it back to Yonder Biology. Standard molecular biology techniques are used to extract and amplify the DNA from the swab.

A digital image of the DNA profile is transferred to a computer, customized and then printed. The end result is not just a piece of art, but a connection to one's past.

Yonder recently had a good friend pass away. Kirk Garrett was fighting brain cancer for the past 3 years but always had a positive attitude and jokes to tell. The process begins with a visit to the Yonder Biology website ‘www.yonderbiology.com’ to choose the color design and size of the DNA portrait. After checkout Yonder Biology mails a DNA collection kit that consists essentially of a sterile cotton swab and a self addressed stamped envelope. The swab is gently rubbed on the inside of your cheek and returned in the provided envelope.

The DNA from the swab is then isolated (purified) using standard molecular biology techniques. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis are then employed to image the DNA profile on a gel matrix. A photograph is taken using a custom-made gel imaging system that includes a high-powered digital camera. The digital images are transferred to a computer where the final touches (color, photo overlay) are completed.

Ok, so just to recap:

I was attacked by a creature while I was walking across the soccer field earlier this month. It scratched me up pretty good. I was able to swab the cut on my arm and isolate the DNA of the creature. After some investigation in the lab, I found that the DNA I isolated was unlike anything I have ever seen before. The DNA was replicating on it's own in the test tube.

So, after a few more hours in the lab, I was able to image the DNA. Here's a picture of what I saw.

Yonder Biology donates DNA Art Portrait at Tony Hawk event in Beverly Hills

Yonder Biology and SINE Wakeboards were at Tony Hawk's annual charity fundraiser, Stand Up for Skateparks, in Beverly Hills, California on October 11th, 2009. Yb donated a DNA art piece to help raise money to build a skatepark at the foot of the famous Watts Towers in Los Angeles.. The event raised over $775,000.

The event attracted celebs and their kids including David Spade, Eric Estrada, Tommy Lee, Perry Farrell, Jon Favreau, Chuck Liddell, Holly Robinson Peete, Tom Greene, Fred Durst, Michael Rappaport, Verne Troyer, Jason Biggs, Victoria Beckham and many more.

Blink 182 performed at the event to close out the day. Tony Hawk did a 900!

Undead DNA

I was able to isolate the DNA of the creature that attacked me the other night. After analyzing this DNA in the lab, it is unlike anything I have ever seen before. It is dividing in the test tube. I dare say, this is undead DNA.

I went back to the soccer field to try to find the creature again. I was able to take one photo before it flew off into the sky.

I will post the DNA profile as soon as I can image it.

DNA from an unknown creature

I was walking across the soccer field near my house on Saturday night and was attacked by something. It all happened so fast, I couldn't see what it was. It left huge scratches across my arm. I swabbed the scratches for DNA to try to identify the creature. I'll keep you posted on my progress to figure out what attacked me as I work through this in the lab.

Thomas Mailund points out that it was 25 years ago today that Alec Jeffreys came up with DNA fingerprinting. The BBC writes about how his discovery was accidental:

His "eureka" moment came on the morning of Monday 10 September 1984 when he pulled an x-ray film out of the developing tank in the laboratory.
He could see patterns in the genetic material which completely discriminated between the three people who had been involved in the analysis: a technician, and a mother and a father.
